1.1. Civil society sensu lato, its constituent parts and its cultural foundations

Studies on the emergence and development of civil society understood in a broad sense: Theoretical and historical studies on the emergence, development and varieties of a civil society broadly understood in the tradition of the Scottish philosophers and classical liberalism, that is, as the institutional framework of an order of freedom including the rule of law, limited government and a public sphere, a market economy and a network of voluntary associations (civil society in a narrow sense). They provide the cognitive and normative perspective for the empirical research of the ASP Research Center.
