Muslims in Europe

Muslims in Europe. Turks in Germany, Algerians in France, Moroccans in Spain.
by Víctor Pérez-Díaz, Berta Álvarez-Miranda and Elisa Chuliá
published in Spanish La inmigración musulmana en Europa: Turcos en Alemania, argelinos en Francia y marroquíes en España.
Barcelona: Fundación La Caixa, July 2004 (329 pages)

The authors describe, analyze and compare the experiences of Turks in Germany, Algerians in France and Moroccans in Spain. They provide a broad picture of the situation and the prevailing trends (demography, economy, society, politics and policy, culture). They take into account the specific characteristics of each case while exploring their common traits. They look into the degree of cultural distance, mutual understanding and reciprocal views between the communities of Muslim immigrants and the receiving societies, and provide a balanced, reflective assessment of the political debate and a variety of public policies, which are understood as policy learning experiences which, as of now, seem far from being successful.
