"Weak points of the Spanish public
life" by Víctor
Pérez-Díaz published in
Spanish “Los puntos débiles de la vida pública española” Papeles de Economía
Española, (extraordinary) number 100, 2004 As the author analyzes Spain’s general performance in
the fields of the economy, society and culture and in regard to the territorial
structure of the state as well as Spain’s foreign policy from the mid 1990s to
the dramatic events of March 2004, he concludes that Spain’s views of the
future, of her identity and of her place in the world are three weak points of
Spanish public life and politics at the beginning of the 21st century. Drawing
from concepts tried out in other disciplines, the author suggests those
weaknesses imply that Spain’s “civil self”, as the bearer of the institutional
make up of an order of freedom, needs reinforcing, by means of a number of
civil repairs and cultural mechanisms -- the efficacy of which depends on the
character of a historical scenario which has taken a turn to the worse.
